We discovered Chartreuse de Valbonne on a weekend trip. On the zigzag road, there suddenly appeared a special roof of colorful tiles, rare among French architecture. Going a little further, we could see from far there was a castle. We both looked at each other and were sure we both wanted to turn around to go that way.
The building amazingly appeared in the middle of the forest like in a fairy tale. We were really overwhelmed when we first reached it.
Outside the building there is a lovely small old house which hosted an art gallery insides. But it was Sunday afternoon so they closed.
The front yard of the building is very charming. From spring to autumn, concerts, festivals and exhibitions are held here. There is also an extra restaurant serving around this time. It is recommended to book a table before coming.
If you want to visit the inside of the building, you must buy a ticket, 5 euros for one person. You can ask for a tour guide if needed. Chartreuse de Valbonne is an old monastery founded in 1204. The building is surrounded by high walls, with tiled roofs. Some roof tiles are colored and glazed.
This is actually an old monastery, built in 1204. It later became an leprosy camp in 1929 before being converted into a rehabilitation center. And today, it becomes a historical site and opens to the public.
The building has been changed many times over the centuries, featuring the church's baroque façade, several chapels with vaulted ceilings, choirs, monuments, small and large monasteries. It also includes 40ha of forest, flower plantations and vineyards for wine production. The vines in the front yard of the building was mesmerizing. You can try and buy wine at the reception hall.
And if you are a person who likes to explore and experience new and unique things, then spend a night at Chartreuse de Valbonne because they have converted 13 monks' rooms into hotel rooms and bishops and lounges into two apartments with three and four bedrooms to serve short-term vacations.
As I stood in the middle courtyard of the building, I felt a sense of tranquility but charm and temptation of this place. If my daughter had not been there with us that day, we would have tried to spend a night at this place.
