When talking about Athens, we usually heard about the Gate of Athena, Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Greek Orthodox Church, Presidential Mansion… But what we loved most about Athens was its Municipal markets which attracted us with its amazing meat, seafood, vegetable and spice stores.
Besides, a crazy incident at our hostel also gave us an unforgettable memory about Athens.
We stayed in a small hostel which is not too far from the bus station. It’s like an apartment with 4 rooms for rent. Our room was quite large and simple but nice decorated. There was a small kitchen as well so we can cook something if we want. That evening around 9 o’clock, When about to brush my teeth in the bathroom, I heard an explosion outside. And then the water in the tap got boiled with smoke. All the guests of the house ran to see what was going on. We saw smoke got out from the small window near the ceiling in the kitchen which was very near the main door. We called the landlord and he came just about 5 minutes later because he lived very near there. At that time, the smoke cover almost all the kitchen and the water from all the taps got boiled. The landlord said that we had to get out of the place immediately because it’s very dangerous because there could be a bigger explosion and there might be a fire. We were all scared and quickly took our bag with important things and got out of the building. The landlord called the firefighter and took us to his other apartment near by. It was winter and I was in my shorts without shoes.
My legs were shaking hard. I didn’t know it was because of the cold or scare. I thought we were lucky to get out important stuff like important papers, phones and money as our room was the nearest one to the main door but I was wrong. The passport of Gautier was not in the bag as it should be. He didn’t put it back after checking something just an hour ago. And he even put his ID in there. It made me think of the saying misfortune doesn’t come singly. Around midnight, the landlord got back and said that the problem was solved and we could go back to our room. The van of the hot water boiler of the house was broken so it could not stop the water from being overheated. There was no more explosion or any damages at the place. Everything was under control. He did suggest that if anyone would like to change to another place, he would do a refund for us but none left. How brave we were! One interesting thing I thought of when getting back to the hostel was it was Friday the 13th coincidentally.
